Pairs Analysis

The parameters of the “Pairs Project” was for each student to frame at least two people into a drawing interacting with one another. For my pairs project I chose to draw a piece with my parents as the subjects. I actually really like the way this (and my self -portrait to an extent) came out especially after the “debacle” of my light, line and space drawing. Material wise, I feel like I finally managed to get a slight hang of the use of charcoal or at least charcoal on strathmore paper. I didn’t struggle to blend as much as before and I am happy with the way I was able to render the texture of the couch versus the blanket (it came out even better than my practice drawing). I feel like my marks are a little too soft and flat in some places but I glad I was able to manage what I did. At first I was worried that because they were majorly under a blanket that you couldn’t really see them “interact” but it is clear that one is laying on the other. This ties into the composition of the page which I think is balanced enough. I like this angle better than drawing them straight on because I thought it looked more interesting composition wise. The focus is on my parents but there is enough couch and background to tie everything together (my background is not the best it does the trick I suppose). All in all I think I did a good job and for the future I want to try and find better ways to show detail/realism or at least a balance between realism and style.
